Consider how many people have lost their lives due to heavy staircases that have collapsed during an earthquake. In the 1985 Mexico City Earthquake (magnitude 8.1), thousands of people died when they became trapped in the collapsing stairwells of the buildings they were in. Traditional wood and concrete staircases don't stand a chance against most natural disasters, but steel staircases provide a high degree of strength and reliability; this can be a life saver during an emergency.
